Boxing Mouth Guards: Types, Fitting and Care

A mouth guard is the cheapest piece of protective gear you will buy, and one of the most important. It protects teeth and lips and helps cushion the jaw. But boxing mouth guards only work if they fit.

How to fit a boil-and-bite guard

Always follow the instructions on the pack, as times vary between guards. The general method:

  1. Soften the guard in hot water for the time on the pack.
  2. Let it cool for a few seconds so it isn't too hot.
  3. Place it over your top teeth and bite down gently.
  4. Press and suck: push it against your teeth with your tongue and suck out the air.
  5. Cool it in cold water so it sets in shape.

Fit check: it should stay in place when you open your mouth, without you biting down. If it falls out, refit it following the pack instructions.

Care and replacement of boxing mouth guards

  • Rinse after every session and let it dry in a vented case.
  • Keep it out of heat, such as a hot car, which can change its shape.
  • Replace it when it becomes loose, thin or damaged, or after dental work.
  • Never share a mouth guard.

Boxing mouth guards for gyms

Mouth guards are personal items, so members should own their own. Branded mouth guards with cases are an easy front-desk product and are often included in new-member starter packs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sparring without one, even "just light".
  • Overheating when fitting, which can ruin the guard.
  • Chewing the guard, which wears it thin.
  • Keeping a loose guard instead of replacing it.
