"What's your minimum order quantity?" is usually the first question buyers ask a manufacturer. The answer is rarely one number. It depends on the product, the materials and how much you want customized, and there is often more flexibility than buyers expect.
What is a minimum order quantity?
A minimum order quantity is the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will make in one production run. It exists because every run has fixed set-up work: cutting patterns, preparing materials, setting up printing or embroidery, and quality checks. Small runs spread that work over fewer pieces.
What decides the minimum order quantity
| Factor | Lower minimum | Higher minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Standard stock materials | Custom-dyed fabric or leather colours |
| Design | Proven design with your logo | A brand-new design or pattern |
| Branding | One logo, one method | Several logos, methods and positions |
| Colours | One or two colourways | Many colourways |
| Packaging | Standard packaging | Custom printed boxes |
How to start with a smaller minimum order quantity
- Use stock materials and colours rather than custom-dyed ones.
- Start with private label: your logo on a proven design.
- Limit colourways to your best one or two.
- Keep branding simple: one logo in one position.
- Mix sizes within one style rather than many styles.
Ask per item: minimums differ by product. Send your full list and ask for the minimum on each, so you can plan the order around them.
MOQ per what?
Always check what the minimum applies to: per style, per colour, or per size. A minimum per style that lets you mix colours and sizes is much easier to meet than one per colour per size.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the MOQ is fixed: simpler specs often bring it down.
- Ordering many colours of everything: it multiplies minimums quickly.
- Ignoring cost per piece: the cheapest order isn't always the best value; larger runs usually cost less per piece.
- Not asking about reorders: check whether reorders have the same minimum.

Frequently asked questions
What is your minimum order quantity?
It depends on the product, material, branding and colours. Send your list and we will give you the minimum for each item.
Can I mix sizes to reach the minimum?
Often yes. Minimums are usually per style, and sizes can be mixed within that style. Confirm this when you request a quote.
Why are custom colours a higher minimum?
Custom-dyed materials have to be made specially, which needs a larger run to be practical.
Is the minimum the same for reorders?
Ask for each product. Reorders of an existing design are often easier because the patterns and set-up already exist.
Can I get a sample before meeting the minimum?
Yes. Samples are made for approval before any bulk order.
