OEM, ODM and private label all mean "a factory makes products with your brand on them". The difference is who creates the design, how long it takes, and how unique the product is. Getting OEM vs ODM vs private label right saves months and money.
OEM vs ODM vs private label compared
| Private label | ODM | OEM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design by | Manufacturer (existing product) | Manufacturer, adapted for you | You (your own design or tech pack) |
| Your branding | Logo, labels, packaging | Logo plus design changes | Fully your product |
| Speed to market | Fastest | Medium | Slowest |
| Uniqueness | Low | Medium | High |
| Best for | New brands, testing a market | Growing brands | Established brands |
Private label
You choose a proven product from the manufacturer's range and add your logo, colours, labels and packaging. It is the fastest and simplest way to launch, with lower development costs. The trade-off: other brands may sell similar products.
ODM (original design manufacturing)
The manufacturer's design team adapts an existing product for you: a different shape, padding, fabric or features. You get a more distinctive product without developing everything from scratch.
OEM (original equipment manufacturing)
You bring your own design or tech pack and the manufacturer builds it exactly. This gives you a unique product and full control, but it takes longer: patterns, samples and revisions all add time.
OEM vs ODM: which one should you choose?
- Launching or testing a market? Start with private label.
- Want to stand out without a design team? Choose ODM.
- Have your own designs and budget for development? Choose OEM.
- Growing? Many brands start private label, then move hero products to OEM.
OEM vs ODM: common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with full OEM too early: development time and cost can delay your launch.
- Not protecting your designs: agree in writing who owns designs you develop together.
- Assuming private label means low quality: it depends entirely on the manufacturer.
- Skipping samples in any model: every model needs an approved sample before bulk.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between OEM and private label?
With private label you brand an existing product. With OEM the manufacturer builds your own design.
Which model is cheapest to start?
Private label usually has the lowest development cost and fastest launch, because the product design already exists.
Can I switch from private label to OEM later?
Yes. Many brands start with private label and move their best sellers to their own designs as they grow.
Who owns the design in OEM?
In OEM you supply the design. Agree ownership in writing, especially for designs developed together.
Do you offer all three models?
